Claus Preisinger Kalkstein Blaufrankisch 2019“Claus Preisinger’s winery is right outside the tiny town of Gols, on the northeast corner of the Neusiedlersee. Claus has been farming Biodynamically since 2008 and is a regular participant at the Raw Wine Fair and other events dedicated to natural wine.
The name ‘Kalkstein’ is in reference to the shell limestone soils found in the vineyards where the Blaufränkisch grows. Average vine age is 30-years-old, grapes are hand-harvested, and spontaneously ferment in stainless tank followed by aging one the lees in used large wooden barrel for six months before being bottled with low amounts of sulfur. True to form, his Blaufränkisch shows bright minerality and great texture through the layers of juicy plum, black raspberry, and savory herbs. The newly arrived 2019 is delicious and vibrant, with dark fruit and light-medium body. People speak about “drinkability,” and we don’t like to overuse the term, but it couldn’t be more apt to describe this lovely red.”

Melini Terrarossa Chianti ClassicoFattorie Melini is the top range of Tuscan wines from Melini, a historic Chianti estate since 1705. The Fattorie line uses only 100% estate-grown grapes from Chianti’s most renowned vineyards, creating benchmark wines such as “La Selvanella”, the first single vineyard wine in Chianti.
The Fattorie Melini Terrarossa Chianti Classico takes its name from the Terrarossa estate, located next to a picturesque village in the heart of Chianti Classico.
Terroir: Fattorie Melini Terrarossa is sourced from within the Sienese region of the Chianti Classico DOC from hillside vineyards surrounding the village of Castellina. These hillside vineyards sit between 900-1,200 feet in elevation and are made up of varied soils of alberese, marl, clay and gravel.
Vinification: Grapes are hand-picked in early October and transported to the winery. Maceration takes place for 15 days in temperature controlled tank followed by 12 months in French oak and a minimum of 3 months aging in bottle prior to release.
Alessandro Zanette represents the new generation of winemaking at Fattorie Melini, continuing in the footsteps of Marco Galeazzo and the patriarch and esteemed oenologist Nunzio Capurso. The winery, located in Gaggiano di Poggibonsi, sits carved out of a steep 1,800-foot hillside; benefitting from this design, multi-stage fermenters accomplish the progressive phases of vinification by gravity rather than forced pumping. Old Limousin casks rather than the more common Slavonian are used for aging each of the Chiantis.
