Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet Hervé Souhaut Souteronne 2018
Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet Hervé Souhaut Souteronne 2018Tasting Note: Nearly purple in the glass with a garnet rim. The nose is an enticing array of strawberry, black cherry, plum, fig paste, smoky herbs and pounded stones. Buoyant black fruit dominates the palate and is followed by pretty red berry tones and minerality. The granite soil evokes something very familiar and Beaujolais-like, while cloaked under the influence of the Northern Rhone, suggesting the more dark and bacon-y tendencies of Syrah from this area.

Guy Breton Cote de Brouilly 2018
Guy Breton Cote de Brouilly 2018Also known as “Petit Max” by his friends, Guy Breton is certainly a name in everyone’s ear ever since Kermit Lynch dubbed him, together with Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet and Jean Foillard, as Beaujolais famous “Gang of Four” in the ’80s. The essence of their philosophy: take a step back, appreciate and cultivate old vines, apply organic farming practices, avoid the use of sulphur, let natural ferments do their magic and help the terroir express itself through minimal intervention. Following these principals, each of them has ever since proven that Beaujolais is more than just ‘Nouveau’ and can indeed produce meaningful, complex and wonderful wines.
Breton loves wines that are easy to drink, and his are typically the lightest in color, the lowest in alcohol, and the least tannic of the Gang of Four. He took over his grandfather’s domaine in 1986 and is nowadays farming 4 hectares organically, with around 80% being planted in the Morgon appellation. The age of his vines varies, with the oldest 80-year-old vines dedicated to his “Vieilles Vignes” cuvée. After careful selection of grapes in the vineyard, vinification begins with carbonic maceration at low temperatures. Fermentation occurs naturally and lasts usually between 15 and 21 days. Once the process is finished the grapes are pressed in an old wooden press. The wines are then aged in used Burgundian barrels before they are bottled unfiltered and unfined.

Mommessin Saint Amour 2017
Mommessin Saint Amour 2017Origins
We all recognise that this most Northern Cru bears a name which is gentle to the ear and to the heart. It is the wine of poets and lovers. If it did not exist, life would be a little less charming. The village of Saint Amour gives its name to this wine. Before that, a long time ago during Gallo-Roman times, a centurion named Amor belonging to the Thébaine Legion, stationed in the Valais region of Switzerland and famous for his Christian faith suffered martyrdom. In all evidence, the ways of lovers, with their pleasures and sorrows, are rarely easy. Today the wine of Saint Amour shows two faces, according to the soil composition and indeed the vinification technique.
Grape varietals
Black Gamay with white juice
Terroir
The commune of Saint Amour is situated at the crossroads of granite soils, best for red wines and chalk/limestone soils, best for Chardonnay. The siliceous/clay and the clay coated with rocky, pebbly elements come from granite rocks (Triassic sandstone).
Vine and soil
Sol: The vineyards are situated on decalcified siliceous clay. Poor soils, quite hardy, typical of the appellation and its granitic gravel.
Age of Vines: 45 years
Yield: 43 hectoliters per hectare
Plots: A rigorous selection of several small parcels on the estate of our grower-partner (representing about 9000 m2). The vineyard benefits from all exposures except the North. The vines, pruned “en gobelet” are worked by sustainable farming methods.
