Mirum est notare quam littera gothica, quam nunc putamus parum claram anteposuerit litterarum.
Ar. Pe. Pe. is one of the best traditional wineries from the mountain region of Valtellina near the Swiss border. Here, the Nebbiolo grape attains the finesse and precision of Pinot Noir. This scrumptious, Burgundy-style red is full of sweet red berries and a firm tannic grip on the end.
Blackbird Vineyards’ winemaking duo, Aaron Pott and Kyle Mizuno, are the artisans behind ÆRENA Wines. Their relationship was once that of mentor and student, but after years of collaboration, they are family. To spend time with them is an exploration of wine, replete with quick wit and belly-clutching humor. In farming and winemaking, Aaron and Kyle strive to communicate a vineyard’s sense of place–by working the wine at the right time to expose the best characteristics of variety and site. According to Aaron, “In almost all definitions of art in the dictionary, there is a reference to ‘human works of beauty.’ ÆRENA believes wine certainly fits under this classification. It is an object created by human intervention that creates something beautiful. Wine is unique as art in that it is ephemeral; once it is consumed, it is gone. Aaron wholly appreciates working with Kyle. So it is appropriate that when asking Kyle to define their winemaking philosophy, his retort is, “Let the wines speak for themselves and don’t screw it up.”
This Willamette Valley vineyard is on what was the Stoller turkey farm for like 50+ years before vines were planted. Let’s just say that the grapes enjoyed unparalleled vigorous soil conditions until things mellowed out a decade ago. Grown in what I consider one of the most beautiful vineyards in Oregon (saying a lot!) he wine is rich and fruity, way too easy to drink (particularly if you drop it in the fridge for about 20 minutes before dinner. Did I hear someone say fried chicken? (roast turkey works too) Great work from winemaker Melissa Burr! –DF
Cool, dense aromas of raisin, blackberry and chocolate are relaxed and in a fine state. Acidity is lively on the palate, so there’s angularity and jolt to this Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Tangy currant and plum flavors are accented by coconut and spice notes, while this is still a bit wild and jumpy on a finish that tastes of mocha and ripe black fruits. Drink through 2030.
